What is the Service Partnership Program?

The Service Partnership Program (SPP) was launched by IMAX in 2001 in an effort to offer a cost-saving alternative to theaters interested in lowering their annual service fees. In exchange for assuming increased responsibility in maintaining their own IMAX theater, eligible theaters recognize a reduction in their annual IMAX maintenance fees. Many theaters have found it difficult to enter the program due to the high upfront costs associated with technician certification and the risk of certified technician turnover.

How does the Service Partnership Program work?

Under the IMAX Service Partnership Program each IMAX theater is required to maintain a certified technician. This technician performs all quarterly preventative maintenance and emergency service on the projection and audio equipment, as well as serving as the first point of contact for the theater regarding all service issues. As part of the program IMAX provides limited on-site service, all replacement parts, and backup telephone support.

There is no equipment to buy (the tools and test equipment necessary to service IMAX systems typically cost $6,000-10,000), and the costs of initial certification required to enter the SPP are reduced by 80 percent.

REDUCED RISK : The greatest danger associated with entering the SPP on your own is related to employee retention. Your theater runs the risk of losing its investment in the technician's certification if the employee leaves. The loss of time needed to certify another candidate, as well as the considerable expense of the certification process itself could potentially reverse all of the financial benefits of entering the SPP. EXPERT TECHNICIANS : On average, a single IMAX Theater does not experience many technical problems in the course of a year. MediaMerge SPP technicians are involved in the upkeep of the equipment in IMAX Theaters across North America on a daily basis. This constant exposure to the equipment and procedures keeps their skills finely tuned. To ensure that service is always available when you need it, we’re committed to having less than six theaters per technician.
