The Problem

The Sanctuary at Independent Presbyterian Church was originally built in downtown Birmingham in 1926. The recent renovation of the facility included extensive upgrades to the pipe organ, lighting and the sound system.

The previous sound system had been cobbled together over the years and presented a wide range of problems from poor coverage to feedback to reliability issues. 

The renovation project offered a unique opportunity to solve these technical issues once and for all.

The Challenge

  • Install reliable and effective systems with minimal disturbance to the beauty of the Sanctuary
  • Include multi-camera broadcast capability for streaming and archival
  • The system would need to be automated to minimize the need for volunteer operators during worship services

The Result

Church sound system installation projects at Independent Presbyterian Church have included a complete architectural renovation of the Sanctuary, updates to the Chapel and a renovation of the Highland Hall contemporary worship space.

  • Sanctuary Church Sound System - includes line source loudspeakers in a stereo arrangement with a sub-woofer package for extended low-frequency response, fills for transepts and under-balcony areas, a digital signal processor with automix capabilities, and a digital wireless microphone system.
  • Broadcast System - includes an automixer for broadcast audio that is tied digitally to the audio feed in the Sanctuary. The system includes three PTZ cameras and broadcast video is controlled using a seamless switcher. The broadcast system is configured for live streaming of services on the internet.
  • Chapel Sound System - includes a line source sound reinforcement system with DSP-based mix capabilities
  • Highland Hall Church Sound System and Acoustical Treatment - Includes a Left-Center-Right speaker arrangement with a compact digital mixing console. Acoustical treatment includes lapendary panels suspended from the ceiling to reduce room reverberation time and a track-based acoustical panel system on the rear wall to minimize sound reflections back toward the stage.
